1. Wood Toran. 17th century, Kathmandu Valley. A central figure of a deity seated on a lotus throne and wearing a flower garland. His multiple hands hold attributes including a bell and dorje, a book, rope and bow and arrow. The top of the arch has a Garuda holding 2 large curled snakes in his talons; under them are 2 makara, or water deities. This is from an old house of the type that used to be all over the Kathmandu Valley. Beautiful worn wood. 19" (48 cm.) wide, 13" (33 cm.) tall, 3 1/2" (9 cm.) deep. $3500.
